HMDV 1101 - Critical Reading/Critical Thinking

Credits: 3

This course introduces students to the demands and conventions of academic reading, inquiry, and analysis in tandem with critical and creative thinking. Critical reading focuses on analyzing texts, synthesizing materials, recognizing valid inferences, composing accurate summaries, and discerning main ideas. In addition, critical thinking focuses on evaluating hypotheses, determining the relevance of information, determining whether the evidence supports the main point, evaluating data for consistency, and recognizing flaws and inconsistencies in an argument. Conclusions drawn from information will be evaluated on credibility, accuracy, and reliability. Thus, the purpose of Critical Reading/Critical Thinking is to create more skillful, better-prepared thinkers for college and the workplace.
