This program is available 100% online.

Our general English major includes courses in composition and literature, providing an effective springboard for students interested in a variety of areas within the discipline as well as a strong foundation for students transferring to or planning to work in many other areas. While helping develop an appreciation for literature and writing, this major supports students in developing critical thinking and the effective communication of ideas-skills that are essential for engaged citizenship and a variety of personal and professional goals.

This major is primarily a transfer degree, although the Associate of Arts does provide some benefits on its own. An AA in English may open specific opportunities in business writing and local journalism, among other areas, while also strengthening writing and thinking skills crucial for applicants in a variety of fields. Other career goals may require transfer to a four-year institution for a BA. Some of the most frequent careers pursued with an English BA are in publishing, advertising, copywriting, teaching, journalism, law, politics, and government service; however, many of those with the degree find it to be useful in a variety of situations based on the breadth and depth of reasoning and writing skills it provides.
