ENGL 2310 - American Literature I Credits: 3 A study of the literature of the early American settlers, of wilderness trials, of the Indian wars, and secret diaries. The course also covers the American Age of Reason and the Revolutionary War including Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson. It concludes with the American Romantic Era with Thoreau’s “Walden Pond”, the philosophical essays of Emerson, the stories of Hawthorne, Melville and Poe and the poetry of Whitman and Dickinson.
