Emergency Medical Services, A.A.S.

The Emergency Medical Services program leads to an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Emergency Medical Services. Successful completion of the program allows the graduate to take the Wyoming State Intermediate Emergency Medical Technician licensure examination and the student is also eligible to take the National Registry of EMT’s (NREMT) National Certification Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Examination. Throughout the program, students will be gradually licensed at various levels of increasing responsibility and scope of practice culminating with the Wyoming Intermediate License at completion.

Key core concepts of EMS education will be emphasized throughout the program; however, all students will obtain exposure to all core content. These topics range from extensive knowledge of many patient medical complaints involving all body systems of the human body to administrative responsibilities and operational responsibilities of the EMS Professional. Throughout the student’s progression in coursework, these same topics will be covered but an ever-increasing depth and breadth of knowledge will be presented and built upon from one level to the next.

Upon licensure, the IEMT practices in settings where policies and procedures are specified and guidance is available. This mid-level training enables students to seek employment in the field of pre-hospital emergency medicine as paid or volunteer providers in a variety of work environments including EMS and Fire Departments, Hospital Emergency Departments and in some cases industrial sites, mines and production facilities. It can also provide an important professional link into other allied health professions. Starting salaries are highly variable, depending on the specific work environment but generally one could earn between $12 and $18 per hour.
